Background: I received my BA from Loyola Marymount University. After my graduation I studied Microbiology at UCLA where I was able to TA a number of Biology classes. As a TA I had offices hours where students would come and ask questions about the class topics along with running reviews for the midterms and finals. Research: While I was at UCLA I volunteered in a microbiology lab where I did protein purification for the study of Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Teaching: I started my teaching career by substituting in Santa Barbara, which I did as I was working on my Credential from California State University, Northridge. After I received my credential in 2005 I started to teach in the Santa Barbara District. I have taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics and I am credentialed to teach all three.
Teaching Philosophy: “Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand” - Chinese proverb. I feel as though learning is a process described in the proverb above. I try to bring this method to my teaching by first explaining a theory to the students through lecture and the use of PowerPoint. Once I have explained the concept I will show them a demonstration that reinforces their understanding and forces them to ponder the workings behind the demonstration. At this point I like to have the students discuss the idea in class as a whole or in smaller groups. Once we have discussed the concept it is time for the students to do an experiment that will force them to use the knowledge that they have just learned. I find that this helps the students organize their thoughts on a subject and helps them to remember the theory longer.
Educational Philosophy: Leonardo Da Vinci Said “Just as iron rusts from disuse, even so does inaction spoil the intellect”. This quote by one of my favorite Scientists explains my philosophy of education. I believe that a student is in high school to learn not only the material but the ways in which they might learn the information presented to them. To this end it is important for a student to get a well rounded education from high school so that they will be able to grasp any concept that confronts them in the future.
Personal Notes: I am the boy’s and girl’s tennis coach and I love to play as much as time allows.
